Assignments will be updated at needs/speed of the class; you will be notified of updates by e-mail, and are responsible for checking the page after notification.
Reading quizzes can and will occur at any time during the course. Listserv assignments/topics will be e-mailed as necessary.

»»WEEK 9 (10/15 - 10/19/01) -- all this week we'll discuss Lorraine Hansberry's play A Raisin in the Sun and try to puts its elements into the perspective of a Marxist critique.

for MONDAY 15 October
-- read the Langston Hughes poem "Harlem," Robert Nemiroff's "Introduction," and the "About the Author" note (at the very end of the tgext) in our edition of Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun. Hughes was one of the foremost poets of the Harlem Renaissance in New York during the 1920-30s, and Hansberry took the title of her play from Hughes' poem (our edition doesn't give the poem's title, but I just did two lines back). Nemiroff's Introduction offers brief historical background on both the time of the play's composition, and the play's reception by the public in its own time and afterward. The "About the Author" section gives a brief Hansberry biography. We can consider Hughes' poem, Nemiroff's much later Introduction, and the Hansberry bio note as what Eco would call paratext.
-- the play itself is sufficiently brief that you can have read the whole thing over the weekend. The play comprises only about nine characters, seven of whom are central. We will proceed with the assumption that you have read the entire play.
-- don't be surprised if there's a reading quiz . . . either just today, or today and tomorrow.
for WEDNESDAY 17 October
-- if you haven't already finished reading the play, have done so by today. We'll continue discussing the play and putting it into Marxist perspective.
-- LISTSERV ASSIGNMENT: try observing the world around you through Marist critique, and see what you notice. In a brief e-mail to the listserv, note what kind of things stand out to you (either on t.v., in books, or just out and about) when observing life through a Marxist lens; submit an e-mail by midnight tonight. After that, please cross-question each other on your findings.
for FRIDAY 19 October -- group work/discussion day.
-- we'll spend today formulating ideas for topics for Paper #2 (URL forthcoming).

-- have ready a tentative thesis statement and outline for paper #2. Bring a copy to turn in to me, and copies to distribute to your group.
for TUESDAY 23 October -- CONFERENCE DAY
-- if you scheduled a conference today, show up for it on time (Turlington 4357). Bring in any revisions made to your thesis statement and/or outline in light of peer group review; bring in a sample page or two from Paper #2 for us to go over; bring in any questions you may have about the paper (but make them focused questions, not just general "how'm I doing?" questions).
for WEDNESDAY 24 October -- CONFERENCE DAY and class
