Searching/Surfing (on) the WWW

It's possible to find material on the WWW two ways: Either of these methods allows you to surf the web for information and/or entertainment. Be careful, though -- the act of websurfing can become almost hypnotizing, and even addictive! Maintain control at all times!

So, an in-class exercise (approx. 30 minutes)

  • Experiment with search engines and link-hopping: use a search engine to find websites on a topic of interest to you, then use links off those pages to take you elsewhere, and keep going from link to link. DO THIS FOR THREE DIFFERENT ENTRIES OFF THE SEARCH ENGINE. While doing this, keep an e-mail window open (addressed to me) and record what sites you first enter, and then the links you followed. This will create a kind of "map" (or "trail"?) to show where you've been. After you've completed the exercise, we'll talk for a few minutes about the experience of real websurfing.
