Landcapes and the Sublime/ Picturesque/ Beautiful
Based on Edmund Burkeís notions of the ěsublimeî and ěbeautifulî (Pohl p.137)
Sublime = terror & limitlessness
Beautiful = closed perfection
Picturesque = between the Sublime and Beautiful
Land and landscapes therefor spiritual and inspiring on their own
Ironically, ělandscape tourismî inspired people to see the natural sites they knew only from paintings -- the image precedes the physical reality
The ěpurityě of nature often enjoyed only after domestication
Turned natural sites into national landmarks
Ironically, the wilderness depicted would not remain wilderness for long, thanks to those very depictions
