Later arrivals: The Quakers
A.k.a. “Religious Society of Friends,” founded in England in late 1640s; came to Colonies for Penn’s “Great Experiment” in 1650
Belief in total equality of all members of the community; rejected any hierarchy in religion, as well as titles and sacraments (to chagrin of other Protestants)
Pacifists: opposed war and conflict that takes human life
Rejected doctrine of the elect (God loves & died for all)
Established Philadelphia (“City of Brotherly Love”) in Pennsylvania (“Land of Penn”) named after William Penn in 1681
Allegedly established peaceful relations with local (Delaware) tribes, by treaty; later traded through “peace offensive” for mutual Quaker-native benefit; ultimately went back on treaty
Welcomed other Protestant sects (Amish, Mennonites, Shakers)
