Indigenous Peoples in the Southwest
Native tribes (non-Aztec) in North America live as both farmers and hunters, some nomadic, others relatively fixed
Later named “Pueblos” by the Spanish after their organization into fixed towns
Anasazi culture used natural landscape (valleys, hillsides, mountainsides) as part of their communal architecture, built through effort of several peoples
“towns”/pueblos centered around ceremonial kiva building, either circular or rectangular interiors with a ladder entry through the roof
Kivas built in keeping with compass points and native mythologies (Pohl p.26)
Kivas often contained ceremonial objects such as katchina (spirit) figurines, ceremonial implements, masks and foods; katchina also represented by dancers in public ceremonies
