-- in course packet, read pp.83-95. This material comprises "Cultural and Historical" background on Charlotte Perkins Gilman, author of "The Yellow Wallpaper." I deliberately waited until now, after you all had read Gilman's text, to assign this material. I wanted you all to see an example of what gets written when one focuses on the author's biography. Yes, we get a good deal of historical background on Gilman's life and times, and some of the issues around her topic; all this gives one kind of insight into Gilman's text. Yet, while this kind of material includes a considerable amount of information, it just as strenuously excludes or precludes certain readings. For class discussion, consider and make a list of what kind of reading this kind of material encourages, and what kind of reading it discourages. We'll discuss Gilman's text a bit more in this light.
-- we'll finish any other discussion of Gilman's text (her text remains one of those we could spend an entire semester discussing and never finish).
-- we'll also work on grammar and editing exercises to prepare us for Paper #2; assignments T.B.A.
-- more grammar/editing T.B.A.
-- more gramar/editing, T.B.A.
-- we'll begin discussing Paper 32 this week as well.
